Our Story

Country Garden Club was started in 1954 by Yvonne Panton-Jones, Jill Landey and Cleone Johnston.

The idea was to form a garden club for people outside the municipal area, because of the difficulty of becoming a member of Johannesburg Garden Club which already had a large membership, and because of problems experienced by the majority of those members with their suburban gardens which could not be compared to those “with a stretch of Bryanston Bundu.”

Club members meet once a month, and host a speaker who educates and entertains the guests / members about a particular aspect pertaining to flora and fauna.

The Country Garden Club celebrated 70 years in 2024.

Annual Flower Shows were organised by the Country Garden Club for the first 13 years from the late 1950’s. Trophies were presented.

In those days there were flower, rose and vegetable sections on display. Even Pumpkins!

“When you have a garden you exchange plants, admire each other’s antirrhinums, and you go wild to get a slip of Mrs So-and-So’s precious exhibit!”

Through the years, Country Garden Club has brought together congenial, harmonious gatherings of like-minded people who can make lasting friendships through their great love of gardening.

To name a few of our outstanding speakers – Keith Kirsten, Terry Moller, Kay Montgomery, Leon Kluge, Sheenagh Harris. We have also been entertained by the late Clive Scott and James Clarke to name a few.

We hold 11 meetings a year – always on the 2nd Friday of the month; in summer we love to get into open gardens but in winter we choose an indoor venue because of the weather & cold.

Our Annual General Meeting happens in May, and our last meeting of the year is usually a fun-packed affair.
